I watched the newly released “Religulous” DVD this weekend, and it was quite cool. Not very scientific or serious even – but it does show how ridiculous any kind of religion is. Or rather – how rediculous our modern literal interpretation of these beautiful mythological stories, intended to bring wisdom through symbolism, are. Are you, reading this, religious in a “there-is-a-spirit-in-the-sky-who-especially-made-us-and-loves-us” sense? Then grow up. We who make THINKING and DOUBTING and INVESTIGATION and KNOWLEDGE and LOGICAL JUSTICE/GOODNESS our ‘religion’, we are tired of you religious types who think that the pope - living a life of luxury in his bloody millions-of-dollars-to-maintain castle, with his thousands-of-dollars clothes and golden candleholders and whatnot - is holy; you who say that God will take care of you and His Will will happen and He is All Powerful – but then go to doctors for their medicine to make you feel better and ultimately not die - well what can I say? Probably nothing. Religion is, simply, ridiculous. The evolution of species is a FACT. Do you even KNOW that the pope himself admitted this? Then of course the story changed – “no, but God started evolution and is controlling it…”. What the heck, man? Fact is, we evolved, God did not create Adam and then ripped a piece of his rib out to create Eve, and then a talking snake made poor Eve eat a fruit which made us evil… even the pope admitted this years ago already. EVEN THE POPE. Do you understand that significance? He is to you the kinda important guy, a mediator between God and man. He said that the creation story, and it follows also the subsequent stuff like exile from Eden – is obviously nonsense. HE SAID THAT. C’mon.
My aunt did not know the pope said this. She still thinks I am lying about it. She still thinks that evolution is not an accepted fact. Why? Because it obviously contradicts her religion. So she will not believe me that it is on record and well-known worldwide, that the pope admitted that evolution is a fact. She believes in Adam and Eve and talking snakes and talking bushes on fire and talking donkeys. It is just ridiculous.
It is said that Jesus wore only the least nescessary clothes and sandals because he gave everything he could to others. Every Sunday when you step into the beautiful large church building with expensive organs and stuff – just ask yourself – would Jesus have done this? Would he have WANTED this? Or would he have sold his expensive BMW or Mercedes, sold the expensive organ, downgraded the church the the minimum required by selling the luxuries, and used all that lots and lots of money to actualy help a beggar in the street? Answer that – not to me but to yourself: What would Jesus have done? And then ask yourself: Am I actually religious? And then, go read up on some history. Learn about all of the other Jesusses, who healed the sick, who was killed on 25 December to ‘die for our sins’, who stood up three days after his death… the Christian story is not original people.
I know how sensitive people can be about this subject. I was inspired by the movie to write this, and I have no desire to discuss this with anyone (because people on the other side of the argument do NOT discuss, they attack, and I have no time for that). We are so indoctrined, we even think that thinking about religion is a sin. That is just sad. It is ridiculous.
